Porcelain Veneers for Crooked Teeth
Do you have a crooked smile? Do you wish your teeth could be straightened safely and quickly? Porcelain veneers may be the right dental treatment option for you. During this treatment at our Edmonton, AB, practice, Dr. Nathaniel Podilsky places thin-yet-strong ceramic shells on the front surfaces of your teeth. The result is a more symmetrical smile.
Porcelain veneers are sometimes referred to as “instant orthodontics” because they can make your smile appear straighter in just two office visits. Patients who undergo this procedure often report a boost in confidence and self-assuredness. In this blog post, our team explores porcelain veneers for crooked teeth so you can be well-informed about your treatment options.
Why Porcelain Veneers?
Compared to other options such as Invisalign® and metal braces, porcelain veneers are a much quicker process. Why? Because the teeth themselves are not gradually forced into better alignment. Instead, a porcelain veneer is placed onto an existing tooth to achieve the appearance of alignment with the other teeth. This gives the illusion of a naturally straighter smile.
Veneers can cover all kinds of cosmetic misalignment issues, whether you have overcrowded, misaligned, misshapen, or gapped teeth. They can also conceal discolored teeth and tooth fractures, giving you a whiter, flawless smile.
Purely Cosmetic
For most crooked teeth, veneers are a suitable option. However, keep in mind that they are only cosmetic. If your crooked teeth affect your bite or oral health, porcelain veneers may not be the best option for you.
When your teeth are too crooked for veneers, Invisalign or braces may be a better option. A combination of both approaches can be used as well. Having veneers placed following Invisalign treatment offers comprehensive results that enhance dental health as well as smile aesthetics.
Porcelain Veneers Treatment Timeline
The process of receiving porcelain veneers requires at least two visits. The first is a consultation at our Edmonton practice. During this visit, we will determine if you are a candidate for veneers and how many veneers are needed.
At the next visit, we remove a small amount of tooth enamel and take impressions of the prepped teeth. We send those impressions out to a lab, where your custom veneers will be made.
This process can take anywhere from two to four weeks, which is much faster than the months required for traditional orthodontic care.
Caring for Your Veneers
Because they are only bonded to the front of the tooth, veneers are susceptible to becoming dislodged or broken. Hard foods can crack, break, or dislodge your veneers. Therefore, we recommend avoiding the following foods:
- Hard nuts
- Pitted olives
- Hard candy
If you follow these guidelines, your veneers could last up to 15 years or longer. Additionally, be sure to visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.
