Teeth Whitening By Dr. Nathaniel Podilsky on January 29, 2015

Some contraindications are:  if you are pregnant, under the age of 16 or have naturally sensitive teeth or allergies to the whitening agents.

If you have existing dental work such as front crowns, anterior composites or white fillings or porcelain veneers would be another contraindication.  The reason is that porcelain and white fillings or composites do not change color with whitening agents.  Whitening the natural teeth would mean that all the anterior white fillings and anterior porcelain work would have to be redone so that the smile matches.

A definite contraindication is anyone that has not been to a general dentist in the past year.  Tooth decay or caries and gum disease, also known as periodontal disease must be treated and controlled to get optimal results with any whitening system.
