Inlays and Onlays
One of the most common dental problems that we treat is tooth decay. There are many different degrees of tooth decay, of course, meaning that there are different ways that the problem can be dealt with depending on the needs of the patient. When you visit our Edmonton office, we will be sure to tailor your treatment specifically to your needs. One option that may prove helpful is the use of inlays and onlays, which we'd like to look at briefly right now.
About Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are dental restorations that are intended to replace substantial portions of decayed or damaged tooth structure. They are custom crafted at our Edmonton office in order to improve the appearance of damaged teeth and restore the bite strength in the process.
Best Candidates for Inlays and Onlays
The best candidates for inlays and onlays are people who have experienced major tooth damage. That goes for tooth problems caused accidents as well as tooth decay and tooth erosion.
The tooth damage these people experience would be too substantial to be treated with a dental filling but not substantial enough to be treated with a dental crown. We will determine the best option for patients during a comprehensive examination and consultation.
The Inlays and Onlays Procedure
During this general dental care procedure, the first step is prepping the tooth. This will involve the removal of damaged or compromised tooth material. Once that is completed, an impression is made of the prepped tooth. From this impression the inlay or onlay will be created. When the dental restoration has been crafted, it is then carefully placed to ensure a matched fit. When final adjustments are made, it is then adhered in place.
Alternatives to Inlays and Onlays
There are several options to consider when it comes to inlay and onlay alternatives. For minor cases of tooth decay or tooth damage, usually a dental filling or dental bonding will be the best option. In cases where a patient has very severe tooth damage, the best option to consider is a dental crown, which caps the tooth from further damage and eliminates discomfort in the process.
In some cases, a tooth will be too severely damaged to be saved. In those instances, the only option is to extract the tooth. Following the extraction, patients can consider getting a removable dental bridge or denture, or perhaps getting Edmonton dental implants. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are surgically embedded into a patient's jaw bone and gum tissue. When in place, the dental implants can securely hold a dental crown, a dental bridge, or a denture.
As stated previously, we will determine your best treatment option during a comprehensive consultation and examination process.
